The 2012 graduating class of the Coast Guard Academy will have as its commencement speaker Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano.
Napolitano plans to address the graduating cadets during their commencement exercises in New London, Connecticut, on Wednesday, May 16. This year’s commencement exercises will be the 131st of the Coast Guard Academy, which has about 1,030 cadets in its four-year program. Their graduates earn a bachelor of science degree, and are obliged to serve for five years in the Coast Guard.
Last year’s commencement exercises had President Barack Obama delivering the keynote address. By tradition, the President of the United States addresses the graduating class at one of the federal service academies on a rotating basis.
