33rd SUPERFROG Triathlon to Remember 9/11 Victims

Posted June 3rd, 2011 by USNavySeals

This year marks the 10th anniversary of that morning when America – and the rest of the world – watched in horror as New York City practically became a war zone, and as one of its icons, the twin towers of the World Trade Center, came crashing down.

SuperfrogThere will undoubtedly be various events that will pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that day, and one of them will be the 33rd SUPERFROG Triathlon, which will be held on September 11 this year. According to a feature on the San Diego News Room, among those who will tough it out on 9/11/11, at the Silver Strand State Beach in Coronado, will be SEALs and other Naval Special Warfare personnel.

The race was created by former SEAL Philip “Moki” Martin, a former member of the Underwater Demolition Team (UDT). It is based on the annual Iron Man Triathlon, and consists of a 1.2-mile open-water swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. Martin’s objective in creating the race was two-fold; it provided SEALs and UDT an opportunity to use their physical training in an event other than duty, and served as a training ground of sorts for teams that would like to join Iron Man.

This year’s event will follow the traditional swim, bike, and run, to be completed in circuits. Participating tri-athletes will compete in two 1,000-yard swims, with a 200-yard run in between, four 14-mile bike laps on Highway 75, and two 6.55-mile runs on both pavement and sand.

Cash prizes await the event’s top six finishers – three men and three women.
