military dogA feature on the Navy Times shares an announcement from the Naval Special Warfare Group 1 based in San Diego, regarding its intention to acquire four high-tech canine tactical vests from K9 Storm, a company based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, called the Intruder vest. Company owner Jim Slater shared the features of the vest.

The Intruder vest is lightweight at 20 ounces, a feature that is its main advantage. It is equipped with an infrared and night-vision-enabled camera, weighing 11 ounces, which feeds images to a 3-inch video recorder and monitor that is held by the handler. Slater shared: “It adds another dimension to the K9 service. It gives you the ability to see what the dog can see.”

A feed can be received by the handler from up to 1,000 yards, within line of sight, and up to 200 yards through multiple concrete walls, the latter made possible through an IR system. This system is waterproof up to 10 feet.

The Intruder comes in coyote tan and Multicam, according to the feature, which means that SEAL K9s are just as camouflaged as their handlers, something that will prove to be important in the field. It runs on rechargeable batteries; the monitor and the camera have a 30-minute battery life.

The gear, consisting of four vests and the camera systems, will cost the Navy $86,457.
