In a previous post, we shared with you the fund-raising gala held last Saturday to officially launch the Lone Survivor Foundation. There were supporters and dignitaries, family and friends present to share the event with its founder, Marcus Luttrell, as they remember that fateful event five years ago that served as inspiration for the foundation.
Among these guests, according to a feature on KHOU Houston, were two of his rescuers. The feature identified Lt. Col. Jeff Peterson by name, who served as the pilot of the rescue chopper; another rescuer was only identified as “the captain on board the rescue chopper”. A feature on The Washington Post from three years ago, however, has a complete list of Luttrell’s rescuers, along with a photo.
Luttrell was rescued on the sixth day that he was on the run. The rescuers aboard the chopper were: Master Sgt. Mike Cusick, Staff Sgt. Chris Piercecchi, Staff Sgt. Ben Peterson, Staff Sgt. Joshua Donnelley, Master Sgt. Josh Appel, Tech. Sgt. John Davis, Tech. Sgt. Jason Burger, Lt. David Gonzales, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Macrander, Master Sgt. Brett Konczal, Maj. Jeff “Spanky” Peterson and Maj. John Phalon. The ranks of the personnel as they appear on the list were presumably their ranks at the time of the rescue.
Peterson shared: “Five minutes prior, they really started letting him know we are in town and we were supposed to dart in get him and leave.” Luttrell also shared his own memories of their meeting, showing that despite his injuries he still had his sense of humor. He was apparently greeted with “Hey, we’re the Green Berets we’re here to get you out,” to which he replied “That’s my line, we’re Navy Seals, we’re here to get you out!”
