Standout slotback Midshipman 3rd Class Marcus Curry was recently dismissed from the USNA football team. Now, a report on the Navy Times shares that the former football team player has resigned from the academy and left the Yard on Monday.

Marcus CurryNavy Academy sources reportedly told the Navy Times that Curry told commanders that he had plans of quitting when it became clear that he will no longer be able to play. Deb Goode, spokeswoman for the academy, confirmed that Curry is no longer a midshipman and is formally out of the Navy, but said that she is unable to “discuss the details of any administrative cases.”

The Navy Times said Curry responded through an online message when asked for comments and made it clear that he left of his “own will” and that he was neither “kicked out nor forced out.” The Navy Times shared that Curry intends to play for Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas in the fall.

Without talking about the case of Curry, academy spokeswoman Goode shared the process that midshipmen go through to withdraw from the academy. Midshipmen are allowed to withdraw without penalty before the first day of their junior year; anyone who leaves or is dismissed from the academy after that time can be billed for the cost of their education.

According to Goode, a midshipman who would like to withdraw will formally notify his chain of command about his intention to leave and the paperwork will make its way up to the superintendent, who personally signs off on each departure.

And I can see you years from now in a bar, talking over a football game, with that same big loud opinion but nobody’s listening.
