In a previous post, we shared with you a proposal brought forth by British Maj. Gen. Nick Carter, commander for the Regional Command South of the ISAF. The proposal will award what is being termed as a medal for courageous restraint, for choosing to hold their fire in an effort to ensure that civilians are not caught in the crossfire.
The proposal has received mixed reactions from U.S. troops, according to a feature on The Washington Examiner. And as far as the general public goes, our gauge lies in the reactions that we received from our readers.
Reader Danny took us to FL Pundit where we saw the author’s rather funny rendition of the proposed medal. Reader CF shares that “We already have this award. It looks like a flag folded in a triangle,” referring to the flag presented to the families of fallen service members.
The Washington Examiner quotes former senior legal adviser to the Green Berets and director of the Center for Terrorism Law at St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio Prof. Jeffrey F. Addicott, who said: “The implication of this award is that we do not engage in war fighting that is appropriate. They’re sending a chilling message to our troops that we are not complying with the law of armed conflict. It’s a propaganda victory for our enemies.”
The award indeed promotes a martyrdom of sorts, unduly risking one’s life for perceived propriety; but then again, a true soldier, sailor and hero will not have earning a medal in mind when they perform their duties.

So maybe it’s even better perhaps to just LET THE ENEMY SHOOT YOU? These Rules of Engagement do NOTHING to protect civlians; they serve to EMBOLDEN AND AID THE ENEMY and MURDER OUR OWN TROOPS! Outrageous!
