The installations mentioned in our previous post are only the tip of the iceberg. Below are more military installations that call Hampton Roads home.
Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach. This Naval station operates 18 F/A-18 Hornet squadrons, and houses the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Units that train the technicians that maintain these squadrons. Oceana is touted as the largest employer in Virginia Beach.
Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. This Navy-Army Base serves as home to several squadrons of Navy SEALs. SEAL 10, where Navy SEALs Matthew McCabe, Julio Huertas and Jonathan Keefe are assigned to, is based out of this base. Eighteen ships call this port home, as do 35 Landing Crafts Air Cushion (LCACs) and 34 conventional waterborne landing craft units (LCUs) as well as other smaller boats.
Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. The U.S. Atlantic Fleet stores, maintains and loads bombs, missiles and other ordnance at this base.
Camp Peary, Williamsburg. The official name of Camp Peary is “Armed Forces Experimental Training Activity.” There is little information that is revealed about what is being done in the camp.
Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth. This is touted as one of the largest shipyards in the world, and specializes in the repair, overhaul and modernization of ships and subs.
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The oldest hospital in the U.S. Navy provides health care to more than four hundred thousand active-duty service members, their families, and military retirees. It is also one of three major teaching hospitals in the Navy.
Other installations include the Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown; the Navy Supervisor of Shipbuilding (Conversion and Repair) in Newport News; and the Coast Guard in Atlantic Area, Portsmouth.
