We have, for a number of posts, talked about the post-SEAL adventures of some Navy SEALs. There are those who proceeded to become entrepreneurs, fitness professionals, and authors, among others.
In a feature on the Yale Daily News, we found the story of a Navy SEAL who is now taking on an Ivy League School, immersing himself in college life in the Ivies – including pledging and getting initiated into a fraternity.
Joe Metzger recounted being part of Desert Storm at the age of 20 and moving on to become a Navy SEAL Platoon Leader and Mission Specialist. He was also a Chief Petty Officer E-7 and War Zone Senior Security Coordinator. Now 40 years old, he is at Yale as part of the University’s Eli Whitney Students Program, where students who are considered as “non-traditional” are able to “bring exceptional backgrounds and aspirations to Yale.” He is majoring in Political Science and American Studies.
The feature shared excerpts from Metzger’s entrance essay into the Eli Whitney Students Program, which talked about meeting former Taliban member – who also used to study at Yale – Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi. Metzger wrote: “I have been fortunate enough to live many grand adventures, but experiencing the hostile and often atrocious acts of war has set me on a path to a new educational odyssey. What drives a man to kill another? What leads to these circumstances? Can desperately disparate cultures ever reconcile? Should they reconcile?”
Metzger met Delta Kappa Epsilon brother Tim Handlon, who was impressed by Metzger and wanted to make him an honorary member. Instead, Metzger wanted the “real thing” and pledged in October 2009.
His post-Yale plans include going home to Cleveland, Ohio, teaching and “getting involved in local politics”.

I do know for a FACT that a SEAL Platoon “leader” is called an OIC and is a LT (O-3), not a Chief Petty Officer (E-7). I don’t know his full story, but hope that helps a little.
