The White House has released a review on the attempt to blow up Northwest Flight 253 on Christmas Day. Included in the document are findings regarding what had not worked and recommendations on what may need to be done better to ensure that the same thing will not happen again. A news feature on The Detroit News indicate that those who were perhaps affected the most by the incident – the passengers aboard the flight – did not seem all that happy with what the report contained.
Several of them made their thoughts about the security report known. Thirty-two year-old Lori Haskell of Newport was quoted as saying: “It seems to me they’re basically admitting that they’re at fault. How much do we pay in taxes every year, and the government isn’t doing its job and almost gets me killed? It’s saying the procedures we had would have worked, but they didn’t, so why are we changing procedures instead of changing the people?” Lori had been traveling with her husband, Kurt.
Another passenger, 41 year-old Richard Griffith of Pontiac, prefers a more gung-ho approach, saying that what the country should do is to show that “we don’t take crap from anyone else anymore”. He reportedly said that we may need to resort to “hanging a few terrorists in the public square”.
Thirty-five year-old Beau Taylor, on the other hand, thinks that the White House review with its findings and recommendations should not have been made public at all. “Now they’ve just told everyone in the world what to do next time. Why are we telling everyone what we’re looking for and what to avoid?”
Some passengers also think that the actions done after the incident may also merit a bit of looking into. Taylor shared Haskell’s opinion that the FBI did not ask them enough questions. Taylor opines further that restrictions among the passengers after the incident – or the absence thereof – may have given an accomplice ample time to rid himself or herself of evidence that may link him or her to the attempt.
