Triple the number of supporters who gathered in Norfolk converged in Matthew McCabe’s hometown of Perrysburg, Ohio, to show that they are standing behind one of Perrysburg’s sons.
Navy SEAL Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe is accused of physically assaulting a suspect who has been tagged as one of the United States’ most wanted terrorists – Ahmed Hashim Abed. Abed is thought to be behind the brutal killing of four Blackwater contractors in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004.
The rally was organized by 24-year-old Corey LeRoux, according to a news report on the Toledo Blade. LeRoux is an Army Reserve veteran who went to high school with McCabe. McCabe graduated from Perrysburg High School in 2003. District 5 of the Ohio Group Children of Liberty sponsored the event, which was held at around noon in Hood Park. It included several speakers who addressed the crowd using megaphones and declaring their support for McCabe as well as his co-defendants, Navy SEALs Julio Huertas and Jonathan Keefe.
Their rallying cry: “Justice for SEALs, not Terrorists!”
Among those who spoke was 25-year-old Adrianne Lee of Bowling Green, who said: “Is it just me, or do these SEALs probably deserve a reward rather than punishment from our government?”
For his part, organizer and veteran LeRoux, who served in two tours of duty in Iraq, declared: “These guys are facing severe punishment, possibly jail time, a ruined military career, all because some jerk – terrorist – said he was [punched].”
In a previous post, we mentioned in passing how military officials maintain that people should not resort to “rush judgment”. Seeing the badly-burned corpses of US citizens hanging from a bridge makes that hard to do, though.
