UN, NATO Support Obama’s Plan on Afghanistan

In a previous post, we shared how a group of veterans expressed their approval for the decision of President Barack Obama to send more troops into Afghanistan.

Another rather influential group also expressed support for the Obama plan. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, reportedly praised the President’s decision regarding Afghanistan through a written statement.

warThe U.N. Secretary General gave a nod to the President’s objective of striking a balance between civilian and military efforts as well as prioritizing the strengthening of institutions and security forces in Afghanistan. The U.N. Secretary General also reportedly mentioned that it was going to be an integral but long-term process.

The decision on Afghanistan also includes a plan to “accelerate the training of Afghan national security forces” as well as to begin the transfer of responsibility to Afghan authorities, set to happen in the summer of 2011. This coincides with the plan of the President to start sending troops home that year.

The other important organization that has a participation in the Afghan war – NATO – has also expressed support. Obama also called on NATO to increase their deployed troops to Afghanistan, and NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen discussed that non-US members of the NATO have plans of sending at least 5,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

Such a move will increase the current NATO troop deployment to Afghanistan to 47,000. The pledges of NATO member allies may be announced during a conference of NATO foreign ministers on Thursday and Friday to be held in Brussels.

Perhaps also important is the statement released by Afghanistan, the country at the center of all this. The statement was released through the International Security Assistance Force of NATO, and it said that it “welcomed the troop surge and timetable for withdrawal.”
