Fallen Navy SEAL Mark Metherell Honored on Veterans Day

Posted November 14th, 2009 by USNavySeals

It will certainly be difficult to trace all the remembrances that were held in honor of veterans and heroes on Veterans Day, but there may be one event worth mentioning. At Emerald Green Park in Emerald Bay, Laguna Beach, California, a plaque was dedicated in honor of a hero who grew up in Laguna Beach and spent his last days as a Navy SEAL.

The inscription on the plaque, according to a feature on The Laguna Beach Independent, reads: “In Honor and Memory of Mark Metherell; Killed in Action; Baghdad, Iraq, April 11, 2008; Emerald Bay Swim Team, US Navy Seal Team V; Wonderful Son, Loving Husband, Adoring Father, Loyal Patriot, Good and Faithful Servant.” It summarizes exactly who Navy SEAL Mark Metherell was.

Mark MetherellMark Metherell was the only American in the lead vehicle along with six Iraqi special forces officers that he was helping to train. They were but part of a large group of Iraqi forces that was making its way into Sadr City. The vehicle that they were riding in drove over a dreaded improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion threw the vehicle 200 feet, a tragedy that spared only its driver.

The tragic loss of a promising life, however, was not for naught, according to Metherell’s father Alex, who spoke during the ceremony. As a result of the explosion that caused Metherell’s death, the situation at Sadr City was brought to the attention of a senior Naval Officer. A team of Navy SEALs soon sought to “clean up” Sadr City and in a matter of weeks after Metherell’s death, “relative peace” was brought to the city.  Indeed, even in tragedy, one can definitely see something good come out of any situation.

Mark Metherell left behind his father, Alex; his mother, Pam; his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Cora. While his is a presence that will never be replaced in their lives, they certainly find some degree of solace in the fact that his was a life well-lived and that his heroic deeds are destined to live forever.
