We recently did a feature on maritime piracy and how it is still very much a reality in some areas of the globe. After all that has been said and done during last April’s hostage situation involving the cargo ship Maersk Alabama, which did not end very well for most of the pirates, one would think we just might not hear something like it anytime soon.
No such luck; it seems like pirates will be pirates, despite the known dangers. Call them the anti-thesis of our Navy SEALs, if you will, willing to risk life and limb for a certain cause, albeit many of us will think that it is the wrong one.
Recent reports said that pirates just attacked and boarded a Thai fishing vessel called Thai Union 3 just North of Seychelles off the coast of Somalia. Also only recently, two British nationals on a yachting holiday were reportedly taken hostage by Somali pirates. These recent abductions reportedly bring the number of ships being held by pirates of the coast of Somalia to nine.
