The Philippines has long been an ally of the United States, and time and again the U.S. military has worked hand in hand with Philippine troops for various endeavors. In the wake of the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Ketsana in the Philippine islands, the United States yet again did not fail to extend a helping hand.
According to a report in the Navy Times, Navy SEALs and Special Warfare combatant crewmen who were assigned to the Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines in the province of Zamboanga were on hand to provide support to the cities and towns of the Manila area affected by the typhoon. This time around, rubber Zodiak boats were not used for clandestine delivery operations or for chasing pirates; these were used to help in the rescue operations of residents in various towns and villages, some of whom were on the roofs of what were their two-story homes. Members of SEAL Team 1, Special Boat Team 12 and Team 20 were on hand during the operations. In addition to rescue efforts, they also brought food supplies.
Also assisting in U.S. military humanitarian efforts in the Philippines are members of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade based in Okinawa, Japan, led by their commander Marine Brig. Gen. Mark A. Brilakis. The team arrived in the Philippines on Thursday.
On their way to the Philippines as another typhoon, Parma, is set to unleash its fury on the islands is a III MEF humanitarian support team, as well as additional marines and sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. They are all expected to assist in relief operations, ready to assist wherever the Philippine government will feel that they will be most needed. They are set to work with the local government in terms of delivering aid, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
