For a lack of a better thing to do this morning (hey, it’s a Sunday), I went through my DVD collection to check if there’s something worth watching again. As my fingers scanned the cases, I was pleased to see “Tears of the Sun”, which is actually about a SEAL Team on a mission. Then, I wondered what other films actually revolve around the SEALs.
Tears of the Sun
In this movie released in 2003, Bruce Willis is Lt. A.K. Waters, leader of the SEAL Team that has been assigned to rescue Dr. Lena Kendricks (played by Monica Bellucci), who was caught in the middle of a civil war in Africa. This movie scored low in several reviews as many critics were not able to find the plot powerful and convincing. Check the film’s official site for a synopsis.
Under Siege
This one is not about a SEAL Team with a mission. It’s actually about a SEAL (played by Steven Seagal) who was relieved from his position as Chief Petty Officer due to an offense against an officer, later served as a cook in the ship that was taken over by terrorists and successfully stopped the antagonists from completing their evil plans. With a gross income of $156 million worldwide in 1992, it surely deserved to have a sequel. And it did in 1995.
Navy SEALs
This movie, which featured Charlie Sheen and Michael Biehn, was released in 1990. I have to admit I was not able to watch this movie, and as far, don’t plan to. I have read reviews on this film and they aren’t very inviting. This film made it to this list because its title is what this entry (and this site) is about.
I guess it is expected that not many movies on the Navy SEALs will get positive reviews from critics as we will always compare them to how real SEALs have shown bravery and honor in actual battle. Nothing really compares to the real thing, but it’s never wrong to give it a try.
